With four different 1,100-yard rushers over a five-year stretch from 1998 to 2002 — all of which being non-first rounders — it’s safe to say, the Broncos had mastered the art of unearthing gems on the ground. Positioned to shine brighter than any first-year runner of that bunch, statistically at least, No. 51 pick Clinton Portis put the finishing touches on a Rookie of the Year campaign, using a textbook inside cutback to clear his pathway for a four-yard score. A dozen yards away from another just minutes later, Portis adds to Week 17’s still-discussed highlight reel, turning into “Houdini” on a right-side stretch run by slipping past multiple Arizona defenders, and then juking two others for a touchdown. Alongside a 37-7 win over the Cardinals, Portis’ 26-touch, 244-yard, two-touchdown evening on Dec. 29, 2002 also allowed for the breaking of Denver’s all-time single-season rookie rushing record.
