Ask a running back to describe a dream scenario for his first-ever NFL game, and it’s likely to sound a lot like what Curtis Martin enjoyed with the Patriots on Sept. 3, 1995. One yard shy of a heroic, game-winning touchdown with under a half-minute remaining, New England’s newly-drafted tailback handled the task with a veteran’s cool, vaulting over a crowded pile before using a second-effort extension to secure the go-ahead score. No milestone went unchecked in game No. 1, as the ever-consistent Martin produced 102 yards and a touchdown (on 19 carries), helping New England avenge a previous year’s postseason loss by topping the Cleveland Browns for a 17-14 win.
