Seasoned with experience as an 11-time veteran and perennial Pro Bowler, Deron Cherry used 1991’s Wild Card Weekend to do what established defenders have done against inexperienced quarterbacks throughout history: sprinkle big plays across the box score. Assigned the role of Kansas City’s defensive “lurker” — one who reads a quarterback’s eyes and jumps routes in the field’s middle — Cherry played his role expertly, setting the bait before collecting two different interceptions, alongside productive returns. Captaining the Chiefs’ first postseason win since 1971, Cherry’s second-to-last game left behind a seismic impact, as he turned two picks into 46 yards during a 10-6 lockdown win over the Los Angeles Raiders on Dec. 28, 1991.
