Longtime Bengals fans may have varied opinions on when the possibility of a Super Bowl title felt the most realistic, but if they’ve supported for decades on end, it’s likely that Stanford Jennings’ play stands as a top contender. Jan. 22, 1989: with much of the football world wondering when one of the game’s soon-to-be Hall of Famers would author the first touchdown, it was instead Jennings, who dashed through the field’s middle on a 93-yard runback. It marked just the second-ever instance of a Super Bowl kickoff return touchdown. The San Francisco 49ers’ revered QB-WR duo commanded the last laugh in a 20-16 result, but Jennings’ contribution was nonetheless unforgettable; alongside the two-return, 117-yard, one-touchdown statline, he also added a three-yard carry.
