If anyone were interested in seeing what it looks like when veteran instincts kick in for NFL cornerbacks, Chicago’s Kevin Byard had quite the masterclass prepared on Sept. 28, 2025. Setting bait against Las Vegas’ quarterback not once but twice, Byard undercut an early-game middle-of-the-field route for a pick, followed by a speedy 35-yard return. One quarter later, Byard emerged once more, “writing back” with a diving interception on a near-identical play to again put his offense in scoring position. Every play counted in the Bears’ 25-24 win, and Byard offered them in abundance, looting the Raiders’ offensive attack for two takeaways, seven tackles (one for a loss), and a 20.8 passer rating when targeted.
